Media Advisory—Tabling of the 2019 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development—Tuesday, 10 December 2019
Ottawa, 27 November 2019—The 2019 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development (CESD) will be tabled in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 10 December 2019. The 3 reports set out the results of work that the CESD is required to complete under the Auditor General Act. The Commissioner’s Perspective is included with the reports to provide additional commentary from the CESD on relevant areas of sustainable development or the environment.
Report 1—Review of the Progress Report on the 2016–2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. This report provides the results of the CESD’s assessment of the fairness of the information contained in the government’s 2018 Progress Report on the 2016 to 2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS). The review covers the targets, key priorities, short-term milestones, and indicators presented in the Progress Report and related to the FSDS’ 13 goals.
Report 2—Departmental Progress in Implementing Sustainable Development Strategies. This review focused on whether federal departments and agencies contributed to the goal of sustainably managed lands and forests set out in the 2016–2019 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. Federal departments and agencies that contribute to this goal must indicate in their departmental sustainable development strategies which of their departmental targets and actions contribute to the federal goal. They are required to report their progress on these targets and actions each year to Parliament in the supplementary tables to their departmental results reports.
Report 3—Environmental Petitions Annual Report. This annual report on petitions informs Parliament and Canadians about the number, nature, and status of environmental petitions and the government’s responses received between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019.
The 2019 Fall Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development will be available on the Office of the Auditor General of Canada’s website immediately following tabling, expected shortly after 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Standard TimeEST). Andrew Hayes, who is currently serving as Interim Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, will be available for interviews with the media.
