Media Advisory—The Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development will deliver 5 audit reports to the House of Commons—Tuesday, 7 November 2023

Ottawa, 23 October 2023—On Tuesday, 7 November 2023, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Jerry DeMarco will deliver 5 audit reports to the House of Commons. Tabling is expected at approximately 10:00 am (Eastern standard timeEST). Descriptions of the reports are provided below.

Embargoed reports

The 2023 Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development included in this release are:

Report 6—Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act—2030 Emissions Reduction Plan. This audit will focus on whether Environment and Climate Change Canada, in consultation with Natural Resources Canada, Privy Council Office, and the Department of Finance Canada, designed a credible and inclusive 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan and whether responsible entities had implemented selected measures to meet the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.

Report 7—Departmental Progress in Implementing Sustainable Development Strategies—Zero-Emission Vehicles. This audit will focus on whether National Defence, Parks Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Canada Border Services Agency contributed to meeting the target of zero‑emission vehicles in the federal administrative fleet under the Greening Government goal in the 2019–2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy and target 12.7 to promote public procurement practices that are sustainable under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), as applicable to each entity.

Report 8—The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program—Natural Resources Canada. This audit will focus on whether Natural Resources Canada designed and implemented the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program to support the deployment of accessible and reliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure for light‑duty vehicles throughout Canada.

Report 9—Monitoring Marine Fisheries Catch—Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This audit will focus on whether Fisheries and Oceans Canada obtained dependable and timely fisheries catch monitoring information, and whether the department used the information in support of its decisions to sustainably manage the harvesting of commercial marine fisheries.

Report 10—Environmental Petitions Annual Report. This annual report on petitions will inform Parliament and Canadians about the number, nature, and status of petitions and responses received from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
