In this audit, we looked at how the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission plans and conducts site inspections of nuclear power plants. What we found is that the Commission does do many different site inspections, and they follow up on all non-compliances. However, the Commission was not able to tell us whether they were doing the minimum number, the right number and the right type of inspections to ensure compliance with all the regulations. As well, we found that 75% of site inspections were done without an approved site inspection guide. So our conclusion is that the Commission needs to improve how it plans and implements its site inspections of nuclear power plants.
